Founded by the present company President, Mr Kieu Hoang, RAAS (Rare Antibody Antigen Supply, Inc.) has its origins in the 1980s as a US plasmapheresis company supplying specialised plasma to the fractionation industry.

The first Establishment License for a series of plasmapheresis centres was approved by the USA FDA in 1980. In the period 1981 to 1994, RAAS built up a network of 11 plasmapheresis centres.

In 1988, RAAS, Inc., entered a joint venture with the Shanghai Blood Transfusion Service, owned by the government of the People’s Republic of China, to form Shanghai RAAS Blood Products Co. Ltd., and become the leading commercial blood product manufacturer in China.

In order to serve the world’s export markets, Shanghai RAAS Blood Products International Co. Ltd., was established in 1989 in Hong Kong.

In 1994, RAAS Inc., sold its plasmapheresis centres and invested in Shanghai RAAS Blood Products Co. Ltd., contributing to extensive expansion and modernisation for the growing Chinese and export markets.

Today, the Shanghai RAAS fractionation facility is one of the largest single-site plants in the world, with a nominal capacity of 2 million litres of fresh plasma per year.

RAAS plasma products include:

Prothrombin complex concentrate (PCC)
Intravenous immunoglobulin G
Intramuscular immunoglobulin G
Hyperimmune Globulin preparations against

RAAS also exports blood typing reagents and blood bags from its subsidiary companies, as well as being an agent for the export of many vaccines from Chinese government vaccine manufacturers and of recombinant interferons.

RAAS also has significant investments of its own in biotechnology in the areas of recombinant factor VIII and other products.

Within a decade, RAAS has grown to the position of an innovative international company in its field with many strengths.

In Shanghai, over 400 qualified professionals are responsible for production, regulatory and medical affairs, research, sales and marketing. A large proportion have higher college degrees, such as MDs, PhDs, MBAs, etc.

The RAAS product philosophy for all its plasma products is state-of-the-art virus safety, achieved with a unique plasma screening programme combined with modern manufacturing processes in a modern factory, multiple virus inactivation and/or removal steps and an exemplary level of quality control.

RAAS plasma is collected from healthy donors in the PRC and from USA FDA licensed plasmapheresis programmes in the USA. From start to finish, RAAS products undergo 5 levels of screening by EIA for the blood borne viruses HBV, HCV and HIV-1/2, and 3 levels of screening by PCR for these viruses.

Unique among all blood product manufacturers is the certification of RAAS for ISO 9001, the highest quality certification level awarded to a producer.
